Description

The chiesa di San Lorenzo a Vicchio di Rimaggio (Church of San Lorenzo in Vicchio di Rimaggio) is located on the left bank of the Arno, on the slopes of Poggio dell’Incontro, on a 170m high hill. Its origin is ancient, perhaps dating to before 1100 AD, the building was restored between the fourteenth and fifteenth century, but it’s still possible to recognize the characteristics of the different stages of construction today.

Under the external two-arched porch remain traces of the old structure and two frescoes from the fourteenth century: a lunette with the half figure of Saint Lorenzo and a tondo with the figure of a kneeling young man, made following the style of Cosimo Roselli.

Initially the porch had three arches, but in 1890 the third arch was closed to restore a room to be used as a school. In this room, with a Venetian ceiling, is a large stone fireplace, with emblems and stripes from the early sixteenth century.

The church interior has a nave with elegant stone ribs from the fifteenth century. The interior walls of the building were definitely adorned with frescoes, discovered during the restoration of the church in July 1894; of these remains today only a small fragment. In the seventeenth century, the original frescoes were covered with several coats of white and disfigured by the insertion of stone altars.

The church did not have patrons, but families who lived in the area (especially the Biliotti di Aldieri and the Altoviti) contributed to embellish and decorate it with works of art.
