Description
196 acres of land, a large garden with many fountains, a manor house and a chapel: this is the Mondeggi villa.
The Mondeggi name derives from Monteggi which recalls the small hills surrounding the villa.
The first documents on the Mondeggi villa and possessions date back to the Vallombrosa monks that allowed building permission on the land in the fourteenth century.
The villa’s ownership has been with some of the most important Florentine families, firstly the Bardi, then the Portinai and then the Della Gherardesca. It was the very Ugolino della Gherardesca, in 1862, who commissioned the expansion of the villa and its interior decoration.
